North Korea fires 60 artillery rounds toward Yellow Sea

Pyongyang fired about 60 shells from the western coast towards the Yellow Sea, artillery fired shells for an hour starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, January 6.

North of the Northern Limit Line, the shells landed in the maritime buffer zone. The line, which was established by a military agreement between the Koreas on September 19, 2018, is regarded by Seoul as the de facto maritime frontier.

North Korea fired back in retaliation

Jerrymusa.com reports that earlier, Pyongyang refused to abide by the accord, and Seoul stopped carrying out some of its terms.

About 200 artillery projectiles were fired by North Korea on Friday into the Yellow Sea, targeting the two South Korean islands of Yeonpyeong and Baengnyeong.

In retaliation, the South Korean military conducted 400 artillery shots during its own fire training.

On Saturday, the South Korean military decided not to respond with a fire drill.
