Nigeria NSA invites striking labour for talks

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have been called to a meeting with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to discuss the current statewide strike.

Jerrymusa.com reports that though it is not certain whether the labour leaders will attend the meeting, the National President of the TUC, Festus Osifo, emphasised during an interview with Arise Television on Tuesday that the labour leaders remain open to “reasonable and sincere” discourse.

The National Security Agency has called a meeting for this afternoon, a person acquainted with the situation told Our correspondent.

On Wednesday morning, Ribadu reported that many people suspected of attacking NLC President Joe Ajaero had been apprehended.

The NSA has previously voiced alarm over the ongoing strike, and a probe into the situation has subsequently been launched.

According to The Punch, the continuing strike is in response to unresolved labour difficulties in Imo State and the November 1 beating of Ajaero and other congress leaders in Owerri.

According to NLC Head of Information Benson Upah, Ajaero was arrested by the police in advance of a statewide protest in Imo.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma accused the labour leader of meddling in the political affairs of the state, despite the fact that the police denied detaining Ajaero and claimed he was just brought into protective custody to prevent a mob attack.

Later, in preparation for the statewide strike, the NLC and TUC penned letters to their respective affiliates, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the National Union of Electricity Employees, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.
