An anti-ship missile launched by Houthi militants hit a US-owned and Marshall Islands-flagged dry cargo ship on Monday, the US Central Command confirmed.
“On Jan. 15 at approximately 4 p.m. (Sanaa time), Iranian-backed Houthi militants fired an anti-ship ballistic missile from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen and struck the M/V Gibraltar Eagle, a Marshall Islands-flagged, U.S.-owned and operated container ship,” CENTCOM stated on X, which was formally called Twitter.
“The ship has reported no injuries or significant damage and is continuing its journey,” added the statement.
Missile was Launch at Exactly 2:00pm
Furthermore, according to CENTCOM, the US Armed Forces detected the launch of an anti-ship ballistic missile into the southern Red Sea at approximately 2:00 p.m. Sanaa time.
“The missile crashed into the Yemeni terrain after failing in midair. No damage or injuries were recorded,” the statement stated.
Jerrymusa.com reports that a US commercial ship was attacked earlier, which cited the British business Ambrey, which specialises in maritime security issues.
The Houthis have threatened to launch attacks on Israeli territory in response to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Gaza Strip.
They have also stated that their ships will not be permitted to pass through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait or the Red Sea until the operation within the Palestinian enclave is terminated.
