No fewer than 15 universities in the United Kingdom have announced plans yo sack some workers and even stop running some courses because of the sharp decline in enrolment by foreign students including Nigerians.
A report published by University World News states that the postgraduate level was hardest hit by the dramatic drop in the enrollment of international students.
UK Gov’t Restriction on Migrant
Jerrymusa.com reports that this change is also related to the UK government’s decision to restrict the number of international students, as some of the concessions provided to them at that level have been reduced.
Furthermore, there are worries that the high cost of living that is experienced worldwide can have a detrimental impact on the enrollment of international students in undergraduate programmes.
Most universities are not exempt from the current scenario, including mid-tier universities, Scottish institutions, and the esteemed Russell Group universities.
A voluntary severance plan was recently implemented by Robert Gordon University (RGU) in response to staff layoffs brought on by the university’s financial struggles as a result of a noticeable drop in international enrollment, a consequence of post-Brexit alterations in UK immigration policies.
RGU cited escalating cost pressures and a considerable reduction in public funding as contributing factors.
