Iran Condemns US-UK Joint Strikes on Houthis

Iran has criticised the strikes carried out by the United States and Great Britain on locations controlled by the Ansar Allah (Houthi) rebel organisation in Yemen as a breach of Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The US and UK attacks on multiple Yemeni cities this morning constituted “a clear violation of Yemen’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and a breach of international laws,” as reported by the Iranian Foreign Ministry on its Telegram channel.

Jerrymusa.com reports that the top Iranian diplomat claimed that such moves by Washington and London would only serve to further destabilise the situation in the area.

A spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry charged the US and the UK with efforts to divert attention away from “the crimes being committed [by Israel] against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip” on a worldwide scale. He also urged the international community to stop the region’s instability from getting worse.

The United States and British military forces used planes, cruisers, and submarines to launch airstrikes against Ansar Allah (Houthi) rebel strongholds last night in multiple Yemeni cities.

The strikes, which targeted Houthi ammunition stores, launching systems, production facilities, and air defence radar systems, were carried out in self-defence, according to US President Joe Biden, who stated that the military operation was launched in response to “unprecedented Houthi attacks” on shipping in the Red Sea.

Following the intensifying tension between Israel and the Palestinians, the Houthis in the Gaza Strip threatened to attack Israeli territory and prevent ships belonging to the Jewish state from crossing the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until Tel Aviv stopped its military campaign against the radical Palestinian organisation Hamas in the beleaguered enclave.

The Central Command (CENTCOM) of the US Defence Department estimates that since mid-November, the Yemeni rebel group has assaulted over 20 military and civilian ships in the Red Sea.
