The Democratic Progressive Party’s incumbent deputy chief of staff, Lai Ching-te, prevailed in the contest earning 40.05% of the vote in the popular vote to take over as the island’s next ruler. In May, he will begin his tenure.
Since 1949, when surviving members of Chiang Kai-shek’s (1887–1975) Kuomintang forces retreated to Taiwan after losing the Chinese Civil War, the island has been run independently.
Since then, Taiwan has kept the flag and certain other attributes of the previous Republic of China, which existed on the mainland before the Communists came to power.
According to Beijing’s official position, accepted by most countries, including Russia, the island is one of China’s provinces.
