Russia sentences 15 protesters over anti-israel riot in airport

Fifteen anti-Israel protesters who stormed an airport in Russia’s southern Dagestan region have been given suspended sentences.

According to jerrymusa.com Last week, hundreds of demonstrators stormed the runway at the airport in Russia’s Makhachkala in an attempt to surround an Israeli airliner.

Since then, 15 people have been given jail terms ranging from two to 10 days by courts in Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region, for their roles in the incident.

TASS news agency reports that two additional people had been sentenced to 60 hours of compulsory labour.

Opponents of the Kremlin are routinely given lengthy prison terms by the courts for speaking out against Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

During Sunday’s disturbance at the airport, more than 80 people were initially detained, and several police officers were hurt.

Officials have threatened serious consequences for those involved.

Sergei Melikov, governor of Dagestan, referred to the riot as a “gross violation of the law” and a “stab in the back” for Dagestani soldiers fighting in Ukraine.

President Putin of Russia blamed Ukraine and the West for inciting the riots, while the Ukrainian capital claimed the unrest was evidence of “deep-rooted anti-Semitism” in Russia.
