NADECO demands Akpabio's resignation over leadership style

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has come under fire from the National Democratic Coalition in the United States for his leadership style. This is because the organisation claimed Akpabio lacked compassion for the plight of Nigerians.

Not involving the senators in certain affairs

According to jerrymusa.com the Senate president was criticised by the pro-democracy group for failing to involve other senators in certain of the upper chamber’s affairs. The Executive Director of NADECO USA, Lloyd Ukwu, advocated for his resignation in a statement given to journalists on Tuesday in Abuja.

“Akpabio has shown a lack of empathy for the poor and suffering Nigerian masses when he recently turned a senator’s remark to “let Nigerians breathe” into a pun that drew mocking laughter from his colleagues during plenary,” the statement continues.

“Only recently, Senators Ali Ndume (Borno South) and Mohammed Onawo (Nasarawa South), the Chief Whip of the Senate, publicly accused Akpabio of not giving senators enough time to question and examine bills, particularly money bills, and threatened to hold him accountable for quickly passing significant legislation and granting executive requests.

Akpabio denies assertion

It has just been a day since Elisha Abbo, a senator from Adamawa North Senatorial District, accused the former Akwa Ibom governor of orchestrating the annulment of his election by an Abuja Court of Appeal.

According to Punch the People’s Democratic Party’s Amos Yohanna was proclaimed the victor of the Senate race on February 25 by the appellate court.

Furthermore, according to Abbo, the Senate President has listed four other senators for expulsion by the courts. However, in a statement released on Tuesday by his spokesperson, Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio denied the assertion.

Distrust and insensitivity

The Senate president expressed outrage at the charge, calling it irresponsible, provocative, and unworthy of a renowned senator while denying having any involvement in Abbo’s dismissal.

The NADECO director, however, remained adamant that Akpabio’s behaviour stinks of distrust and insensitivity towards his fellow senators. Therefore, Ugwu asked senators to start the impeachment process against Akpabio.
