UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland emphasized that a long-term solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved through a two-state solution, with no viable alternative.
Wennesland reiterated that the UN does not see any other way to achieve lasting peace, and therefore, the two-state solution is the only viable option.
Creation of an Independent Palestine
Jerrymusa.com reports that the two-state solution calls for the creation of an independent Palestine within the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, coexisting in peace with Israel.
Wennesland stressed that the UN Security Council needs to agree on fundamental principles for the coexistence of Israel and an independent Palestine.
He also noted that the situation cannot be resolved quickly, and that the UN Security Council must work towards establishing a framework for a peaceful coexistence between the two nations.
