Israeli Army says it Destroyed ‘Strategic’ Hamas tunnel in Central Gaza

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported that it had destroyed a strategically important tunnel in the central part of the Gaza Strip, the press service of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said.

Location of the Tunnel

According to the statement, the tunnel was located under the Salah al-Din Road, connecting the north and south of the enclave, and crossed Wadi Gaza.

Jerrymusa.com reports that the underground tunnel, located at a depth of around nine metres and several hundred metres long, was used by Hamas to travel between the north and the south undetected.

The IDF said that it had created a different humanitarian route in the region by blowing up the tunnel.

Origin of the Conflict

On October 7, 2023, militants from the radical Palestinian organisation Hamas, which is based in the Gaza Strip, launched an unexpected incursion into Israeli territory, killing many Israeli kibbutz residents who lived close to the Gaza border and kidnapping over 200 Israelis, including women, children, and the elderly.

This incident sparked tensions once again in the Middle East. The Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem’s Old City was the target of Israeli authorities’ harsh activities, which prompted Hamas to launch its attack.

Israel established a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip, began bombarding the enclave and a few locations in Lebanon and Syria, and conducted a ground operation in the Gaza Strip to combat Hamas. West Bank residents have also reported clashes.
