Pension default: Electricity union shuts down KEDCO indefinitely

The Kano State Chapter of the National Association of Electricity Employees shut down the state’s Electricity Distribution Company on Monday due to management’s inability to pay pension deductions for the previous 72 months.

The union will not remain passive

According to jerrymusa.com Ado Riruwai, the NUEE Chairman for the Northwest Zone of the union, who is reported to have led the picketing of the company, declared that the union would not remain passive and permit the business to continue to stop sending pension payments.

Riruwai bemoaned the Kano Electricity Company’s decision to target union leaders who wish to speak on behalf of their members at the same time.

He claimed that victimising anyone who seeks his freedom at work amounts to imperialism and immorality against the rights of workers as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.

It is an illegal act

According to Riruwai, “this illegal act is equivalent to wickedness against the rights of workers as guaranteed by the Nigerian constitution.”

In a similar vein, the union charged that despite the risk associated with working at KEDCO, corporate management refused to pay for workers’ medical insurance.

When reached, Mr. Sani Bala Sani, the head of the company’s corporate communication unit, acknowledged that the union had picked up the business. He said that the over-five-year-old personnel welfare issue was the focus of the action.

The issue was inherited from previous management

According to Punch He claims that the matter was left unresolved by the previous management when they left, inheriting it from them.

According to Sani Bala Sani, “This is a problem that touches on employee welfare and has been lingering for more than five years.”
