Workers in the South West geopolitical zone of the Nigeria Labour Congress has called for a new national minimum wage of N794,000.
Jerrymusa.com reports that the suggestion was given to the ruling government on Thursday by Mrs. Funmi Sessi, the chairman of the Lagos State Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC.
Rising Cost of Living Prompts Need For Increase Wage
In a memo submitted to the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (TCNMW) public hearings in the South-West Geopolitical Zone, which were hosted at LTV Ground, Agindingbi, Ikeja, Lagos, and chaired by Mr. Wale Edun, the Coordinating Minister for Economy, and the Minister of Finance, Sessi made the call.
According to Sessi, “the necessity for a sustainable increase in the minimum wage for Nigerian workers has become necessary due to the rising cost of living in all economic sectors.”
The unions deemed it “unacceptable” that certain governors were unable to meet the minimum wage.
