The United Nations has said it will collaborate with President Bola Tinubu’s administration to ensure the success of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria, saying the UN is of the conviction that the success or failure of Africa depends on the country.
Jerrymusa.com reports that the global organisation claims that Nigeria’s advancement correlates with Africa’s growth because, in the event that Nigeria fails, there is no possibility for any other nation on the continent to succeed.
Nigeria Stands as a Pillar in Africa
When he led a group from the UN system in Nigeria on a courtesy visit to Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa on Thursday in Abuja, Mr. Mohammed Fall, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, revealed this.
Fall stated, “If Nigeria doesn’t make it, there is no chance for any country to make it,” in reference to his proposal for a humanitarian response strategy for the country. Nigeria’s success here will put the continent, the world, and our subregion all on track to meet the SDGs.
Fall was cited as stating, “If we succeed in Nigeria today, the whole of the continent succeeds; but if we have challenges or difficulties to succeed in Nigeria, I am sure it is all of our continent that will be pulled down,” in a statement released by Stanley Nkwocha, the vice president of Nigeria’s spokesperson.
Mr. Fall commented, “The plan is beyond helping those who are in need but to set the groundwork for a transition towards medium- and long-term development.” regarding the suggested humanitarian response plan for Nigeria. We must take action right away.
It is the only method to maintain the progress made in lowering societal vulnerability that has been documented by the government and other partners.
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria praised the steps the Tinubu administration has taken to date to realign the economy and stressed that Nigeria’s success depends on support. Nigeria is vital to Africa’s advancement.
In addition to asking for the Federal Government’s cooperation to launch a social safety programme that will lessen the effects of the reforms on the most disadvantaged members of society, Mr. Fall promised the UN system’s support for the reforms implemented by the Tinubu government.
“Your decision has received praise from all quarters, but we (at the UN) believed that there was a significant chance it would affect the most vulnerable members of our society before we received the results.
Responding, Vice President Kashim Shettima said Nigeria will work closely with the global body to address all the country’s challenges as a people.
