Homes and businesses were left without power supply for several hours yesterday after the nation’s national grid collapsed twice in less than one month.
Jerrymusa.com reports that barely a week had passed since the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, or NERC, controversially reviewed Band A power consumers’ higher bills. This latest collapse occurred.
On Thursday, March 28, 2024, the last collapse happened, marking the second instance in less than a month.
The Grid Failed Twice in Three Months
The grid failed around three in the morning, according to data provided by the National System Operator, a semi-autonomous division of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, or TCN.
As supplies increased to 250 MW, the Transmission Company of Nigeria, or TCN, was still fighting to restore the grid. The largest load was 80 MW, followed by 50 MW for Ibadan Disco, 40 MW for Benin Disco, and 80 MW for Abuja and Lagos Disco.
There were only two plants on the system that made up the generating trend: Okpai Gas and Ibom Power, with 117.00 MW and 59.50 MW, respectively.
Calls and texts were not returned; therefore, attempts to speak with Mr. Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN, about the most recent development were unsuccessful.
