Nigeria’s decision to sign a $150 billion agreement with Samoa has sparked controversy over alleged clauses promoting LGBTQ+ rights.

Jerrymusa.com reports that the agreement, signed on November 15, 2023, reportedly requires developing nations to support LGBTQ+ rights in exchange for financial support from advanced countries.

“The Samoa Agreement celebrates perversity,” said Sonnie Ekwowusi, a Lagos-based lawyer and chairman of the Human and Constitutional Rights Committee of the African Bar Association (AfBA).

“Certain Articles of the Agreement, especially Articles 2.5 and 29.5, legalise LGBT, transgenderism, abortion, teen sexual abuse, and perversity in African countries.”

Ekwowusi criticized the signing of the agreement, questioning the judgment of Nigerian officials. “The signing of the Agreement by Nigeria constitutes a threat to the sovereignty of Nigeria and Africa.

It further debases our democracy.” He also queried whether Nigerian officials who signed the agreement were representing the interests of the Nigerian people.

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) reiterated its stance against same-sex marriage and LGBT issues, with administrative secretary Abubakar Akande stating, “We cannot agree to what is against the injunction of our Creator, Allah, on this matter, and which also disrespects Nigeria’s sovereignty.”

The chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Treaties, Protocols, and Agreements, Rabiu Yusuf, stated, “To the best of my knowledge, nothing has happened in the National Assembly regarding the Samoa Agreement.”
