The Nigerian Army has deployed 177 personnel to Guinea-Bissau as part of a peacekeeping mission to address political instability and institutional crises in the country.

Jerrymusa.com reports that Major General Boniface Sinjen, Chief of Operations, Nigerian Army, made the announcement at the graduation ceremony of troops at the Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre (MLAILPKC) Jaji.

“Guinea-Bissau is grappling with political instability and institutional crises, which pose a significant threat to peace and sustainable development in the sub-region,” Sinjen said.

Sinjen emphasized that the deployment is in line with the ECOWAS mandate to support the government of Guinea-Bissau in consolidating its authority and addressing security challenges.

“You gallant men of the Nigerian Army have been trained by this renowned Centre of Excellence to play that critical role,” he said.

He urged the troops to remain committed to upholding the principles of ECOWAS peacekeeping operations and to conduct themselves professionally, maintaining the highest level of discipline and respect for human rights.

The troops underwent a Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) program at the MLAILPKC, which equipped them with the necessary tactical skills and knowledge to support the government of Guinea-Bissau in stabilizing the country.

“This Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) has equipped you with the necessary tactical skills and knowledge to support the government of Guinea-Bissau in stabilising the country,” Sinjen said.

The Commandant, MLAILPKC, Maj.-Gen. Ademola Adedoja, appreciated the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen.

Taoreed Lagbaja, for his commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of peacekeeping troops through realistic training.

“His leadership and vision have been instrumental in shaping the readiness and capabilities of our troops, and I am deeply appreciative of his support,” Adedoja said.

The deployment aims to consolidate peace and stability in Guinea-Bissau, promote democratic governance, and foster stability in the country.

“Your contribution to the ECOWAS Stabilisation Support Mission will be instrumental in shaping the future of Guinea-Bissau, thus promoting peace, stability, and development in West Africa,” Adedoja said.

The Nigerian Army has a zero-tolerance policy regarding sexual exploitation and abuse, and any personnel found guilty will face severe consequences. “Any personnel found guilty of such offences will face severe consequences,” Sinjen warned.

The troops have been warned against drug trafficking and abuse, and have been encouraged to embody the core values of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and uphold the highest standards of conduct.
