The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has announced plans to spearhead a global collaboration aimed at enhancing the protection of undersea cables.

Jerrymusa.com reports that the minister disclosed this on X (former Twitter) on Sunday.

Necessity of Reviewing International Regulations

Tijani underlined the necessity of reviewing international regulations and fostering collaborations with regional and international agencies to accelerate measures to secure essential infrastructure, acknowledging the critical role these cables play in the digital economy.

Tijani assured individuals impacted by the outages that the Nigerian Communications Commission was actively collaborating with all pertinent parties to expeditiously address the current problems.

He claims that the project is a big step towards guaranteeing the dependability and robustness of underwater cables, which are essential lifelines in the linked world of today.

Damage to the underwater cable that provides Nigeria and other nations in the West African sub-region with broadband Internet connectivity on Thursday compelled numerous banks, other financial institutions, telecom companies, and affiliated businesses to reduce their activities.

“There have been issues with cable firms West African Cable System and African Coast to Europe on the West Coast route from Europe, as well as downtime with SAT3 and MainOne.

“Submarine cable outages, according to the minister, are fostering our digital economy’s resilience and expansion.”

He applauded Globacom, MTN, West Indian Ocean Cable Company, and MainOne, the telcos, for their amazing altruism in working together to lessen the effects of these cuts.

“The leadership of @GloWorld, @WIOCC_, @MTNNG, @MainOneService, and the entire sector in coming together to limit the impact of the cuts is truly admirable,” Tijani remarked.

“We are all getting better prepared for the future thanks to your initiatives.

“This is also a chance for us to examine international agreements and rules to suitably safeguard underwater cables, and I will be interacting with regional and international organisations to quicken work on this vital agenda.

“To those who are experiencing disruption, know that @NgComCommission is collaborating with all important parties to find a quick solution.”
