Cholera Outbreak The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a cholera outbreak in 31 states across 107 Local Government Areas, resulting in 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths.
Jerrymusa.com reports that according to the NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, the country has recorded a 3.5% case fatality rate since the beginning of the year.
“As of June 24, 2024, 1,528 suspected cases and 53 deaths have been recorded across 31 states and 107 LGAs with a case fatality rate of 3.5% since the beginning of the year,” Dr. Idris said.
Nigerian Government Responds
The Nigerian Government has activated the National Emergency Operation Centre to contain the outbreak, which experts warn may worsen due to the ongoing rainy season.
Dr. Idris emphasized the significance of the fatalities, stating, “These fatalities are not just statistics, but a significant loss of a loved family member, a spouse, a parent, and often a seasoned healthcare worker and team member.”
He noted that the situation is compounded by the intensifying rainy season, which may further increase the risk of cholera transmission and impact. “This situation is compounded as the rainy season intensifies,” he said.
