The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has reported a surge in Lassa fever cases, with 10 new cases confirmed across four states between May 20 and 26.

“This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 897 in 2024, with 162 deaths recorded so far,” the NCDC said in a statement.

Jerrymusa.com reports that the case fatality rate stands at 18.1%, higher than the 17.1% recorded in 2023. Lassa fever is a severe viral hemorrhagic illness transmitted through contact with contaminated food, household items, or infected persons.

Lassa Fever Symptoms

“Its symptoms include fever, headache, sore throat, general body weakness, cough, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pains, and chest pain,” the NCDC explained.

In severe cases, it can lead to unexplained bleeding from the ears, eyes, nose, mouth, and other body openings.

The NCDC has expressed concern over the growing number of cases and has urged heightened surveillance and preventive measures across the country.

“The public is advised to adhere to recommended safety protocols and report any symptoms to local health authorities promptly,” the agency said.

The NCDC is working with state health authorities to coordinate a response and intensify contact tracing and control measures to curb the spread of the disease.

“We are committed to ensuring that all cases are promptly identified and managed, and that the outbreak is brought under control.”
