The Federal Ministry of Education summoned Lead British International School, Abuja, on Tuesday over an alarming viral video regarding alleged bullying incidents at the school.
Dr. Yusuf Sununu, the Minister of State for Education, highlighted during the meeting in Abuja the government’s unwavering position against harassment and intimidation in educational institutions.
According to reports, Mr. Abraham Ogunkanmbi, the head of school, led the team from the school to the meeting.
Viral Video Raises Concern
Jerrymusa.com reports that Sununu conveyed her grave concerns regarding the widely shared video. He promised that the government would act decisively to prevent a repeat in any educational institution.
A seven-person committee was formed by the minister to look into the circumstances behind the instances that were documented in detail.
Using Lead British International School as a case study, he explained that the committee’s task was to look into the events as they were portrayed in the films and develop a more thorough investigation that could be conducted at other schools to address broader social vices.
Sununu emphasised the value of forging closer ties between students and school administrators.
He emphasised the vital role that communication plays in addressing such difficulties and stated that such a relationship would permit fast reactions to such incidents in the future.
The minister reassured Nigerians that all students’ rights would be upheld and safety would be guaranteed by the government.
Additionally, he reaffirmed how seriously the ministry takes its responsibility to combat and eradicate vices in the field of education.
In response, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, the Permanent Secretary, asked if the school had an anonymous tip box where children could discreetly file grievances.
Ogunkanmbi, speaking on behalf of the delegation, announced that the institution has opened inquiries into the regrettable incident.
He gave the ministry his word that the necessary action would be conducted in response to the incidents, including disciplinary actions in accordance with the school’s policies.
