The Labour Party (LP) has called on the Federal Government to reconsider its decision to hike the tariff payable by some electricity consumers in the country.
Jerrymusa.com reports that the call was made by the party’s Lagos State Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Olubunmi Odesanya, during a Saturday interview in Lagos with the News Agency of Nigeria.
She called the “astronomical” tariff hike unfair, stating that it will negatively impact the economy in addition to electricity users.
Nigerians Steuggling to Survive
Odesanya claimed that the withdrawal of fuel subsidies had already put Nigerians in a difficult situation and that the spike in tariffs would make their situation worse.
A spokesman for the party continued, saying that if the government felt compelled to raise tariffs, they shouldn’t exceed 25%.
Nigerians are enduring the worst every day. It’s just not working this way. Nigerians are suffering in large numbers.
“Hardships are currently plaguing Nigerians. The government must be aware that individuals are at the heart of every government.
“This outrageous increase in the price of electricity ought to be reevaluated, stated Odesanya.
Instead of eliminating subsidies, she asked the government to cut the cost of governance in order to save money.
She asserts that the government needs to be resolute in its efforts to combat corruption and end poverty.
