The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has directed its members to comply with the directive of the two labour centres to begin an indefinite nationwide strike on Monday.
Jerrymusa.com reports that the General Secretary, Mr. Afolabi Olawale, stated in a Saturday release that the union is dedicated to ensuring complete adherence to the directive.
“As previously reported, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) declared an indefinite nationwide strike, starting Monday, to protest the proposed new minimum wage.
New Minimum Wage
“In a joint statement, NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, and TUC President, Mr. Festus Osifo, announced the strike due to the tripartite committee’s failure to agree on a new minimum wage and the electricity tariff hike.
“Afolabi expressed the union’s concern and dismay at the federal government’s insensitive approach to negotiating a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers, given the administration’s socio-economic policies that have impoverished the working population.”
He directed union leaders at all levels to ensure total compliance with the directive. Additionally, the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) is mobilizing its members to join the strike, as directed by NLC and TUC.
“Acting General Secretary, Mr. Dominic Igwebike, cited the unfinished minimum wage negotiations, electricity tariff hike, and apartheid categorization of Nigerian electricity consumers as reasons for the strike.”
He urged national, state, and chapter executives to mobilize members to ensure the government takes appropriate action, with the strike taking effect on Sunday, June 2nd, at 12:00 midnight.
