Following the cholera outbreak in Lagos and other states, UNICEF has called for robust measures to safeguard school children.

Jerrymusa.com reports that the organization urged concerted efforts to prevent disruptions to the academic calendar due to the spread of the disease.

“The cholera outbreaks critically affect children and young adults, who face substantial health risks, particularly in schools,” said Celine Lafoucrier, Chief of UNICEF Lagos Field Office.

Children More Likely at Risk

She noted that children are prone to severe dehydration and high mortality rates, emphasizing the need for “good sanitation, hygiene practices, access to clean water, and regular handwashing with soap and clean water to combat the outbreak in schools.”

Lafoucrier solicited “adequate awareness across the country to sensitize the populace on cholera outbreak and preventive measures.”
