The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris On Wednesday, reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to a realistic and sustainable minimum wage for Nigerian workers.
Jerrymusa.com reports that He urged organised labour to propose a reasonable minimum wage that won’t lead to massive job losses, emphasizing that the government is not opposed to increasing wages but seeks a balance to avoid undermining the economy.
Speaking at the 2024 Synod of the Charismatic Bishops Conference of Nigeria in Abuja, Idris warned that unrealistic wages would jeopardise the welfare of Nigerians and lead to mass retrenchment of workers.

He sought the support of religious leaders in raising public awareness about government initiatives and efforts, acknowledging their influential platforms and critical role in disseminating information.
Idris commended the Charismatic Bishops Conference and the Christian Association of Nigeria for promoting harmony and peaceful coexistence, and praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership in implementing reforms for growth and sustainable development.
He emphasized the importance of the Church’s partnership with the government in championing social causes and providing essential services like hospitals and schools. Idris encouraged religious leaders to support the government’s vision for Nigeria’s renaissance and to pray for guidance towards a prosperous future.
He reiterated the need for a realistic and sustainable wage system that won’t undermine the economy, emphasizing the government’s commitment to promoting economic rebirth, national security, agriculture, food security, and transforming infrastructure and transportation.
