The United States has agreed to withdraw its troops from Niger, according to the Washington Post.
Jerrymusa.com reports that US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell met with Ali Lamine Zeine, the prime minister of Niger, to finalise the decision.
A senior State Department source told the newspaper, “The prime minister has asked us to withdraw US troops, and we have agreed to do that,” under the condition of anonymity.
Niger Revokes US Military Pact
The military deal between the US and Niger, which called for the stationing of some 1,100 US troops there, was revoked by the rebels who took over the country last month.
President Mohamed Bazoum was declared to be removed from office by a faction of Niger’s Presidential Guard (PG) soldiers on July 26, 2023. Following the overthrow, the rebels established the National Council for the Protection of the Homeland, led by PG Commander General Abdourahmane Tchiani.
